San Diego Zoo

san diego zoo

The world famous San Diego Zoo spans 99 acres and receives 3.2 million visitors a year. The challenge that the Zoo was experiencing was rooted in visitors not being able to use the paper illustrated map to locate their favorite exhibits and points of interest.  I was tasked in creating a application that focuses on the map, the POIs and the ability to access directions with future abilities to add additional implementations.

new app, new map

The paper illustrated map did not match the geographical coordinates that would allow me to use the illustrated map in the application. Using GIS data provided by the client, Google Maps 3D and personally walking throughout the Zoo to verify land marks, I created a custom isometric illustrated map using Adobe Illustrator.

I focused on giving the map as much screen real estate as possible.  Using a bottom navigation with a filter bar on top, allows for the users to filter the map without having to reach across the screen to cover the view points in order to filter their points of interest.

Since the launch of the application in October 2018, the Zoo has had over 5,000 downloads of the application. I am currently working with the client to integrate a secondary park - The San Diego Safari Park - into the application.
